We had been at Lilau for over two years and when we first arrived just the basic shell of the camp was already there. We had developed this place into a beautiful natural haven suited to our needs and it was just perfect, but the rabies and the beginnings of political unrest in the area had started to make us aware of our vulnerability. Because of this we had started to transport the few animals that could not be returned to the wild to Harold where we knew they would be cared for. One of these was Horace, the marabou stork. We could never risk returning him to the bush because by now he had become completely tame and there was a risk that the repaired bill would break off again and he would quickly starve to death.
